Batik Flora & Fauna -A Mixed Media Approach
Thursday August 9am to 4:30pm
All levels -- Students will take home 2 small paintings on canvas.

Spend a full day creating beautiful nature themed mixed media paintings on Masa paper and canvas. We will explore a special batik technique with Masa rice paper mounted on canvas. We’ll use the “dropped-in color” watercolor technique to paint vivid flora and fauna on the paper support. It’s a messy, fun, out of control way of painting that allows the colors to blend and fuse without “mud”. Colored pencils, ink lines and collage elements will be added to embellish the shapes. Don’t worry if you’ve never painted or drawn before! - I’ll go over the basics and there will be images available to work from or bring some images of your own. You’ll discover how beautiful and bright watercolors can be with this special process. The artwork will be sealed with an acrylic varnish to protect the surface. A border will be painted with an antiquing paint layer and brilliant metallic acrylic paints.

January 20 to March 17, no class on Feb. 24, April 17 to May 26
Cost: $145.00 per 8 week session.

A class for all skill levels: This class will focus on contemporary watercolor and liquid acrylic approaches including the “dropped in color” technique, which incorporates luminosity and brilliance in painting. We’ll work with other contemporary experimental painting techniques including monoprinting, batik methods with Masa paper, pours, translucent collage, mark making and surface textures to create glaze layers in exploratory compositions. Alternative supports will be explored such as paper mounted onto canvas and sealed with an acrylic varnish. Pigment characteristics, color theory, composition, and design will also be covered with demos, critiques and individual instruction. Returning students will benefit from new class assignments each quarter. Supplies will be discussed at the first class meeting. Please bring the following materials to the first day of class: ½ sheet 140 Arches 140lb cold pressed watercolor paper, 1 round #12 or #14 watercolor or acrylic brush, watercolor or liquid acrylic pigments that you already have on hand in a palette, water container, 2b pencil, journal for notes. Your structure will house a unique small pamphlet stitch book with collaged pages. We’ll start with house construction and papier-mâché, building your own unique style of home. Bring in several simple ideas drawn in your journal ahead of time. Don’t forget to add a window or two. While the papier-mâché dries we’ll create a small pamphlet stitch book that reflects the milagro theme. This can be a memory or a hopeful event for the future! We’ll paint and embellish the house with contrasting acrylic paint layers and collage. The Milagros will be added on to complete the casa. Viva la Vida!
